Kilbrittain Parish Bulletin
Lent 2010
Response
This time last year we mentioned recession and Lent. Since then 2009 has proved a difficult year. The recession deepened, a very wet year, floods, the coldest spell in over sixty years and two reports on the failure to protect children. Then on 12th January our perspective was suddenly changed. As we watched the news coming in from Haiti our own woes paled into insignificance. The response to the plight of the victims of the earthquake was huge. The response in our own parish was immense. I am convinced that such response comes from the sense of Christian values that is deep within us. The Christian message and particularly the practice of Lent encourage us to follow Jesus who "came not to be served but to serve". This encourages us to look outward from ourselves and to respond to the needs of others. We know that in doing that we respond to God. The Trocaire Lenten Campaign has been there for 37 years. There is a whole generation who have not known Lent without a Trocaire Box in the home. The campaign is based on the three pillars of Lent, prayer, fasting, almsgiving. This was certainly the response to the plight of the people of Haiti. We prayed for those in tragic circumstances, we did without - even in these difficult times - so that we could contribute to help them.

TROCAIRE
Trocaire Boxes are available at the Church. It is a good idea to have the box in some prominent place in the house during Lent. What is saved by the Lenten Fast could be put into the box.
On Holy Thursday, the evening on which we celebrate the Last Supper, the Boxes will be brought to the Altar at the time of the Offerings.
