Samhain.
“Naoib in domhain dálaigh, sóerait samain síanaig”. “The saints of the teeming world ennoble stormy Samhain”. The saying is found in a ninth century Irish martyrology, or list of the saints. Samhain goes back to pagan Ireland. It marks the night of the beginning of the darkest season of the year, when the winter days set in. The people believed that on this night the dead were permitted to come back to visit their old homes again. So they left the doors open, kept the fire blazing brightly and went to bed early to allow the ancestors to revisit undisturbed. Many of the traditions of Halloween have their origin in paganism.
The Christian missionaries were able to associate these traditions with our belief in the Resurrection of the dead and so encouraged people to use this time to pry for those who had gone before. It is still a very strong tradition not only in Ireland but throughout the whole Christian world. The Church Catechism puts it:
From the beginning the Church has honoured the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead." Catechism of the Catholic Church; 1032.
